Jack is another wartime Pit Bull. He was a member of the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry and a fine soldier of his unit.
Jack understood bugle calls, and spent most of his military career in Virginia and Maryland, fighting in nearly all of the battles.
He was even present at the Wilderness campaigns, Spotsylvania, and the seige of Petersburg.
Jack sought out the dead and wounded soldiers once the gunfire stopped.
He, himself, was even wounded severely at the battle of Malvern Hill. He was able to escape capture by the confederate soldiers, and he survived the battle of Antietam in 1862.
Jack was captured twice. He was the only dog to be traded as a prisoner of war. During his second capture, a Confederate soldier at Belle Isle was used as exchange, which is wartime protocol for recovering captured soldiers.
He was presented a silver collar purchased by his comrades, but shortly afterward, Jack disappeared. It’s thought that someone stole him.
