Fiona Apple announced that she is postponing her upcoming South American tour to care for her Pit Bull- Janet. Apple found Janet as a puppy in Echo Park in Los Angeles. She had a a rope around her neck and bites on her ear and face, indicating the puppy was more than likely used by dog fighters.
Apple kept the puppy, raised her, and loved her. Janet became family.
Fiona Apple’s pit bull suffers Addison’s Disease, an adrenal insufficiency.
Basically, the Addison’s Disease mostly affects the cortex of the adrenal gland, making it so that it cannot properly secrete and regulate cortisol and aldosterone. Without these hormones, the sodium levels will decrease and cause the potassium to increase, lowering blood pressure. High potassium in the blood can stop the heart from beating fast, which can cause the dog to go into a potentially fatal shock.
Apple posted handwritten scans, stating “I can’t leave her now, please understand.. If I go away again, I’m afraid she’ll die and I won’t have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out.”
When Apple returned from her North American tour, she noticed that Janet wasn’t as playful as she was before. She didn’t even want to go for walks.
Apple says that where it may take her 20 minutes to pick out a pair of socks to wear to bed, she had no doubts about postponing her tour.
Apple tells everyone, “I am not the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship. I’m the woman who stays home, and bakes tilapia for my dearest, oldest friend.”
