Pit Bull Saves Man from Coma

Stray, an 8-year-old Pit Bull, didn’t have a great start in life. She was found abandoned in an alley in California. She barely had any fur due to severe mange and was taken to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The man who found her, adopted her and nursed her back to health. She required 18 months of medication. And, per the state of California, she had to be quarantined for six months of quarantine and attend six months of obedience school.

In 2012, Stray and her owner moved to New Jersey to be with family.

Well, in February 2017, she alerted her family to a medical emergency another family member was experiencing. The 24-year-old man was feeling ill for about three days. He thought he had food poisoning and the flu, which had been prevalent in the Cold Spring area.

As his symptoms worsened, making him barely coherent, Stray made a ruckus. Stray was jumping around barking to lure other family members our of bed.

The family found the man fully unconscious and rushed him to the Cap Regional Medical Center. The man was in a diabetic ketoacidosis, which blood sugar levels nearly 10 times above normal.

The man never knew that he had Type 1 diabetes. He was just hours from slipping into a coma.

Diabetic ketoacidosis can cause a person’s breath to give off a scent, Stray picked up on the change and alerted the family.
