Catahoula Leopard Dogs are great hunting dogs. They are commonly used in hog hunting. Pit Bull are also great to use hog hunting. Many people who hunt hogs will breed a Pit Bull and a Catahoula Leopard Dog together in attempts to get puppies that will make the ideal hog hunting dog with the aspects of both breeds.

Because many Pit Bull Catahoula Dog mixes have hte merle coloring, you’ll find many purebred merle Pit Bulls misclassified as mixes. But, it can be hard to properly ID a dog unless you know the parents. When looking at Pit Bull Catahoula mixes, you may have a dog with the long legs of the Catahoula Leopard gecko with the musculature of the Pit Bull. You may have a dog that is thin like the Catahoula but shorter like the Pit Bull.

  1. where can I find a catahoula/American pitbull that looks like a pitbull but has the color of a red leopard catahoula with double glass eyes?

    • Because it would be a mix, it will be hard to determine what a pup would look like as an adult. With mixed breed dogs, there’s no guarantee that a mix would look like an pure-APBT with the coloring of a Catahoula. Check hog hunters who breed the mixes, as well as rescues that may have something like what you’re looking for. Good luck.

    • I’m actually not sure how to tell the difference between a merle coated pitbull and a leopard hound pit mix. I know there are a few that end up in shelters. I adopted my mix about 3 months ago and he has the double glass eyes. Half is blue on the top and half brown at the bottom. They’re really great dogs, but their hunting tendency is definitely displayed much more with the mix breed.
I would definitely recommend adopting one that’s a little older because it’s really difficult to tell what he’ll look like if he’s just a pup.

      • Merle Pit Bulls aren’t very common. But, for the most part, they will have all the basic traits of a full-blooded Pit Bull. Catahoula Pit Bull mixes may have a longer snot, longer legs, thicker coat, thicker tail, a hound-howl and other hound characteristics. But in general, it’s hard to ID a pure-bred Pit Bull even if it’s not a merle coat. Many people have trouble, misidentifying the American Bulldog, mastif breeds, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, Staffordshire Terrier, mix-breeds, etc.

I 100% agree that adoption is the way to go. It’s hard to tell the end-appearance until the pup is over 18 months old. I always recommend adopting young dogs, but not because of appearance, personality- ensuring that the dogs personality is a fit for the adopter and the home that the dog would be joining.

  3. My dogs mom was a catahoula pit mix and the daddy not sure she is about 85 lbs and is such a gentle dog ,she is very smart, playful, and we love her so much she is white with a big brown spot that goes from the neck to the rump and half way down both sides and she has the most beautiful gold eyes

  4. We adopted Wedy from a county animal control 3 months ago.she is about 2 yrs old with full muscular pit physique and beautiful pink/white/brown cowhide speckled coat, long legs and tail. Smart as all get out and very protective of house and family. Love her personality and affection balanced with serious protector attitude. Gets along with our 14 tear old golden/ lab female but they worked out wih only a little blood. Love this combination of two great breeds.

    • That’s good to hear you you not only adopted your dog, but had a good experience blending her with your existing dog.
